Will you be looking for a new job in media in 2019? If so, it’s time to get organised with these job search tips…
1) Spend a bit of time on research before you start. What have been your favourite media jobs? What are your strengths? Refer to our blog post ’10 Quick Questions For Job Search Success’ for what you should ask yourself before you start job hunting.
2) Social media profiles. It’s a given now that recruiters and potential employers automatically check your social media profiles. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date with relevant experience and a professional looking photo, and ensure profiles on other social media sites are set to private or have nothing incriminating on them. We’ve known people to lose job offers because of negative posts found on their profiles.
3) CV file name. It’s a fantastic help to recruiters if you use your un-abbreviated name as your CV file name, along with the month that you’re sending it in. So if you can save your CV as ‘Your Name – x Month 2019’ it helps us get organised for you.
4) CV. Use a simple template that you can find online from the likes of Total Jobs for a neat, impactful CV. Refer to our page ‘CV hints and tips’ for further details.
5) Have a master copy of your CV that you tailor to each particular job or company, highlighting the experience that is relevant, skewing wording to mirror the job advert. Have a look at our blog post ‘5 tips to make your CV stand out’ for more details.
6) Email address. A whacky email address is likely to put off a recruiter or employer. Why respond to firstname.lastname@example.org when you can you can get hold of someone’s email who uses their actual name?!
7) Research what media recruitment agencies work in the area that you want to apply for. Track down the ones that will spend time working with you, listening to your requirements and figuring out who you will fit with. Check out the media recruitment agency’s website for a flavour of where they specialise, how they operate and what jobs they have on.
8) Don’t feel like you have to wait for a job advert that you like in order to speak to a media recruitment agency. Often we know of jobs that we aren’t allowed to advertise that you may be suitable for, and if we feel that you are a great fit for somewhere we can approach our contacts directly to see if there are prospects in the pipeline for you.
9) Interviews. Prepare prepare prepare! Work with your media recruitment agency to find out a bit about who is interviewing you and what type of interview it is likely to be, then research the company, know your CV off by heart and have practised answering likely questions in a way that highlights your skills. 10) Second interview presentations. Presentations are a normal part of a second interview so make sure you follow the five ‘P’s – Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance! Research what you are meant to be presenting on and who you are presenting to, then work on the presentation structure and lastly delivery.
