Do you need some CV hints and tips?

We all know that first impressions count. The fact that your CV has to stand out for all the right reasons is indisputable, so from a seasoned recruiter’s eyes here’s some advice on how achieve it.

Profile

  • A great way for the client to get to know you quickly.

  • Make this relevant to the role with key facts.

  • Summarise your experience, skills and a standout achievement.

Work Experience

  • Start from current job and work back.

  • Competency based bullet points are best - the competencies companies look for are communication, decision-making, leadership, results, teamwork and trustworthiness.

  • Show results that you achieved – eg increase in…, sales of….

  • Use decisive language eg implemented, led, managed.

  • Avoid overly common phrases eg man manager, team player.

  • Give examples of when and what you’ve managed, achieved and developed.

  • Give examples of when you’ve achieved a return on investment for your employer.

  • Revisit the job advert, look at what the employer is asking for and demonstrate you have what they need.

  • Remove extraneous words such as adverbs – it dilutes your message.

  • Be honest and be yourself – we like it if you can get yourself across professionally without sounding like a jargon eating robot!
